Planning your journey from Southern Germany to Halkidiki via Thessaloniki
Flying from Southern Germany to Halkidiki is one of the easiest ways to reach the Greek sea from Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg. With Thessaloniki Airport as your gateway, you can be on the beaches of Kassandra or Sithonia the same day, if you plan your flights and transfers with a bit of care. Halkidiki.info – travel guide for Sithonia, Kassandra & Mount Athos and our Our local team of skippers, travel agents and scuba instructors with over 20 years of experience in Halkidiki is here to help you. have been doing this journey for over 20 years, both for work and holidays, so the notes below are based on real routes and real summer conditions.
Key overview: how Southern Germany connects to Thessaloniki and Halkidiki
For Munich, Stuttgart and Nuremberg, the backbone of your trip is Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” (SKG). Once you land, Halkidiki is 45–90 minutes away by car depending on where you stay. The main choices you’ll make are:
- Direct seasonal flights from Southern German airports to SKG (especially strong from Munich).
- Charter packages or charter-style seats on holiday flights to SKG, tied to specific changeover days.
- One-stop routes via hubs such as Athens (ATH), Frankfurt (FRA) or sometimes Vienna and Zurich.
- Ground transfers from Thessaloniki Airport to Halkidiki: rental car, taxi, transfer van or bus.

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG): your main entry point to Halkidiki
Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” sits just south-east of the city, not far from Perea Beach and roughly on the way to Halkidiki. It’s a mid-sized airport, busy in summer but compact enough that walking between gates is quick and baggage usually appears reasonably fast. From SKG you can:
- Drive directly to Kassandra Peninsula (about 45–70 minutes to the first resorts).
- Continue to Sithonia (about 1.5–2 hours to Neos Marmaras and surrounding beaches).
- Reach Nea Moudania, the main junction town and hub for buses deeper into Halkidiki.
- Stay a night in Thessaloniki city, around Aristotelous Square, and continue the next day.
For official airport information and any last-minute terminal changes, it’s worth checking the official SKG airport website before you travel.
Direct flights from Munich, Stuttgart and Nuremberg to Thessaloniki
Most travellers from Southern Germany aim for a direct flight to Thessaloniki if the days and times work. These routes are particularly strong from late spring to early autumn.
Munich to Thessaloniki: the strongest Southern Germany–SKG link
Munich (MUC) usually has the most frequent and stable direct flights to Thessaloniki, both in summer and shoulder seasons. In a typical 2026 schedule you can expect:
- Multiple weekly direct flights in high season, often daily or close to it.
- Flight time of roughly 2 hours, gate-to-gate.
- Morning and afternoon departures on popular days, which help families and those connecting to Halkidiki the same day.
If you’re flexible with dates, it’s often possible to pick a direct flight that lands in Thessaloniki before mid-afternoon, giving you time to pick up luggage, collect a rental car and reach Kassandra well before sunset.
Stuttgart to Thessaloniki: solid summer direct options
Stuttgart (STR) tends to offer strong seasonal connections to SKG, especially from May to October. The pattern we usually see:
- Several direct flights per week, concentrated on classic holiday changeover days (Friday–Sunday).
- Flight duration similar to Munich, about 2 hours.
- Charter-style flights tied to hotel packages, plus some seats sold as stand-alone tickets.
Because some flights are operated as part of package holidays, you may find that departure times are quite early in the morning or later in the evening. This can be a good thing if you want to avoid the heat of the day when arriving in Halkidiki, but it does affect how you plan transfers and first-night sleep, especially with children.
Nuremberg to Thessaloniki: more limited but very handy
Nuremberg (NUE) generally has fewer direct flights than Munich or Stuttgart, but in summer it can still be an excellent option if you live in Franconia or northern Bavaria. Typical patterns include:
- Seasonal direct flights a few times a week, mainly during school holidays.
- Strong focus on packages, with some possibility of booking seats only.
- Flight times again around 2 hours.
If the direct options from Nuremberg don’t line up with your dates, it’s often worth checking connecting flights via Munich or Frankfurt instead of driving long distances to other airports.
Charter patterns and how they affect your holiday dates
Southern Germany to Thessaloniki flights are heavily influenced by charter patterns. In practice this means:
- Strong peaks on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, especially from late June to early September.
- Fixed 7, 10 or 14-night stays when you book a full package with hotel and flights.
- Less flexibility if you want odd durations (e.g. 5 nights) or midweek returns.
If you’re booking accommodation in Halkidiki independently, pay attention to which days the direct flights run. Aligning your check-in and check-out with flight days can save a lot of stress and avoid either a very short first night or a “lost” day near the airport.
Connecting via hubs: ATH, FRA and beyond
When direct flights from Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg don’t fit your dates, or you’re travelling outside the main season, hub connections become important. The most common ones are:
Via Athens (ATH)
Athens is Greece’s main hub and usually offers several daily flights between ATH and Thessaloniki. This option can work well when:
- Your local airport has good connections to Athens but not to Thessaloniki.
- You want to combine Halkidiki with a short stay in Athens or the islands.
- You’re travelling in early spring, late autumn or winter, when seasonal SKG routes are reduced.
Do keep in mind that connecting via Athens adds flying time and one more take-off and landing. For small children or nervous flyers, a single direct flight from Southern Germany to SKG is usually more comfortable if available.
Via Frankfurt (FRA)
Frankfurt is a major European hub with frequent flights to Thessaloniki. From Southern Germany, you might find your best route is:
- Short domestic or regional hop from Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg to Frankfurt.
- Then a direct FRA–SKG flight.
This can be particularly useful if you’re comparing options with those from Western Germany. Our separate guide for that region, Western Germany to Halkidiki in 2026: Frankfurt, Cologne & Düsseldorf Flights, gives a broader picture of how FRA fits into the network.
Other hubs: Vienna, Zurich and more
Depending on the airline, you might also see convenient one-stop options via Vienna, Zurich or other European cities. These can be attractive if:
- You find a good balance of price, total travel time and layover length.
- You prefer a particular airline or alliance for miles and status.
- Your departure airport has especially strong connections to one of these hubs.
As a rule of thumb, if your total travel time door-to-door is creeping towards 8–10 hours with two flights and a long layover, it’s worth checking if a direct or simpler route from a nearby airport is possible instead.
Approximate travel times: from airport to the beach
Once you land at Thessaloniki Airport, the time to reach Halkidiki depends on where you’re staying and how you’re travelling.
From SKG to Kassandra Peninsula
The first resorts of Kassandra are the quickest to reach from Thessaloniki:
- Nea Potidea / Nea Fokaia area: about 45–60 minutes’ drive.
- Afytos / Kallithea: usually around 1–1.15 hours.
- Further south (Pefkochori, Hanioti, Paliouri): about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
In high summer, especially Friday afternoons and Saturdays, traffic can slow down near Nea Moudania, where the road splits towards Kassandra and Sithonia.
From SKG to Sithonia Peninsula
Sithonia is a little wilder and less built-up than Kassandra, and it takes slightly longer to reach:
- Nea Moudania (main junction on the way): about 40 minutes.
- Neos Marmaras: around 1.5–2 hours from the airport.
- Further south-east (Sarti, Vourvourou area): often 2–2.5 hours depending on stops and traffic.
The reward is usually quieter beaches and very clear water, especially outside the peak of August.
Public transport: buses and connections
If you’re not driving, you’ll typically go from Thessaloniki Airport into the city and then out to Halkidiki:
- Airport bus or taxi to Thessaloniki KTEL “Macedonia” bus station.
- Intercity KTEL bus from there to Nea Moudania or directly to your village in Kassandra or Sithonia.
- In some cases, a change at Nea Moudania Bus Station of KTEL Chalkidiki for local routes.
Bus routes and frequencies change between seasons, so always double-check times close to your travel date. Timetables, opening hours and routes can change without notice. Always double-check locally before you travel.
Night arrivals and families: what to consider
Many Southern Germany–SKG flights, especially charter-style ones, land late in the evening or even around midnight. This can work well, but it needs planning.
Arriving late with children
If you land after 21:00 with kids, we usually suggest one of two strategies:
- Stay one night near Thessaloniki Airport or in Perea Beach, then drive to Halkidiki the next morning. This keeps transfers short when everyone is tired.
- Pre-book a private transfer straight to your hotel in Halkidiki, so you don’t have to drive unfamiliar roads at night after a travel day.
Driving to Kassandra at night is straightforward, but you’ll still be sharing the road with other tired drivers leaving the airport. Sithonia’s roads are narrower and twistier in parts, so we only recommend a late-night drive there if you’re confident and well-rested. Sea and outdoor activities depend on weather and your own fitness level. Always follow local safety advice and skipper instructions.
Luggage and transfers on late flights
For late arrivals from Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg:
- Keep an overnight mini-bag with pyjamas, toothbrushes and a change of clothes in your hand luggage in case your suitcase is delayed.
- Have clear instructions from your hotel or apartment for late check-in (key boxes, night staff, contact number).
- Confirm transfer details in advance, including what happens if your flight is delayed by a couple of hours.
Luggage tips for Southern Germany–Halkidiki flights
Because you’re likely combining a medium-haul flight with a road transfer, packing a bit differently can make the journey smoother.
- Use soft luggage if you’re hiring a small car; it fits more easily in compact boots.
- Pack swimwear and light clothes in your cabin bag so you can enjoy the sea even if your hold luggage is delayed.
- Bring a light jacket or hoodie for the plane and for the first evening; the sea breeze near Thessaloniki and Halkidiki can be cooler than expected in May, early June or late September.
- For families, divide essentials between suitcases so that one lost bag doesn’t leave someone without all their clothes.
Combining Thessaloniki with Halkidiki: a smart stopover
With many Southern Germany flights landing at convenient times, it’s tempting to head straight to Halkidiki. But if you have a night or two spare, Thessaloniki is well worth a short stay. From the waterfront and Aristotelous Square to the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, you get a real sense of Macedonian history and modern city life before moving on to the beaches.
We’ve put together a full guide on this idea: How to Combine Halkidiki with a Short Stay in Thessaloniki, including where to stay and how to organise your onward trip.
Once you’re ready to leave, you’ll move either from the city centre or from Thessaloniki Train Station area out to the KTEL bus station, or directly to the airport to collect a rental car. [random_authority_text]

Who each route suits: Munich vs Stuttgart vs Nuremberg
Although all three cities are in Southern Germany, the best route often depends on your travel style and where you live.
Munich-based travellers
- Best for direct flight lovers: MUC–SKG is usually the most flexible and frequent route.
- Good for short breaks: 4–5 night trips can work thanks to more flight options.
- Easy hub access: If direct flights don’t work, Munich is strongly connected to Athens and other hubs.
Stuttgart-based travellers
- Great for classic 7 or 14-night holidays on charter-style flights.
- Ideal for families who want one simple direct flight and a pre-arranged transfer.
- Hub flexibility via Frankfurt or Vienna if you’re travelling off-peak.
Nuremberg-based travellers
- Perfect if your dates match the direct NUE–SKG flights, avoiding long drives to other airports.
- Good hub connections via Munich or Frankfurt when direct options are limited.
- Often quieter airport experience than the very big hubs, which some families prefer.
Seasonal feel: when it’s easiest to travel from Southern Germany
From our experience travelling between Southern Germany and Halkidiki over many summers, the feel of the journey changes a lot through the season.
- May and early June: Flights are running but not yet at absolute peak. Prices and crowds are moderate. Weather in Halkidiki is usually warm but not too hot, and the sea is fresh but swimmable.
- Late June to late August: Maximum flight frequency and the highest demand. SKG is busy, especially at weekends. Roads to Kassandra can be slow at peak times. Ideal for school holidays but book early.
- September: A favourite for couples and nature lovers. Flight schedules are still fairly strong from Munich and Stuttgart, sometimes thinning a bit from Nuremberg. Sea is warm, evenings are softer, and beaches are quieter.
- October and shoulder months: Fewer direct flights; you may need to use hubs like Athens or Frankfurt. Great light and tranquil beaches, but some seasonal hotels and tavernas start closing.
For a broader sense of the climate through the year, you can cross-check with an official climate source such as the Hellenic National Meteorological Service or similar.
Adding sailing or diving to your Southern Germany–Halkidiki trip
If you’re flying in from Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg and staying a bit longer, consider adding a sailing day or diving experience once you’re here. Thessaloniki and Halkidiki’s coasts are excellent for:
- Day sailing trips from Kassandra or Sithonia, exploring small bays and quiet beaches. If you’d like to explore the coast, ask us about day trips at sea and sailing boat options.
- Bareboat or skippered yacht charters for a few days, which you can research through specialised platforms such as yachts.holiday.
- Scuba diving in clear Aegean water; for inspiration on typical local dive experiences, have a look at portoscuba.com.
Practical safety and comfort tips for the whole journey
Because you’re combining flights and road transfers, a bit of planning goes a long way.
- Check passports and ID well ahead, especially for children, and keep digital copies stored securely.
- Allow realistic connection times if you’re changing planes in Athens, Frankfurt or elsewhere; rushing with kids is never fun.
- Book car hire early for July and August, and confirm pick-up details at Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia”.
- Have an offline map or navigation app downloaded before you leave Southern Germany; mobile data can be patchy on some coastal roads.
- Watch the heat in peak summer; carry water for everyone during the transfer and take breaks if you’re driving straight after landing. Sea and outdoor activities depend on weather and your own fitness level. Always follow local safety advice and skipper instructions.
